Good art should risk both pretension and sentimentality. Risk only pretension and at best it will feel like an academic exercise; risk only sentimentality and it will be saccharine and cloying.

"pretentious" + "sentimental" = Six Feet Under.

That may or may not be a good thing, depending on your feelings about Alan Ball.

I think that's a pretty good art club to be in. I've actually never seen any Six Feet Under. I'm afraid I'll like it too much.

I'm full of completely sensible logic like that.
